Methods of Backup in Windows

When utilizing Windows backup the data can be duplicated to a tape or file.  When a file is created it is important to designate a file name when copying the data to tape it is necessary to use a tape device.

In Windows to run backup you should first click on start, then select programs, then accessories, then system tools, and finally backup.  The first time a backup is created choose to select all of the files, for all subsequent backups only files that have been changed or created should be backed up. 

The fastest method is to combine both incremental and normal backups which require the lowest amount of space for storage, but the recovery is more difficult and takes more time.  The feature that is unique to software for backup by Windows is its ability for locked files to be backed up.  Windows also creates a copy of the data in a volume shadow that allows an accurate time copy of the hard drive contents, ensuring data is able to be written continuously throughout backup, files that are opened are not omitted, and users will not be locked out during backups. 

System State Data, a comprised version of the registry, service directory, and various other components that are key to the system, are able to be backed up utilizing the software available for Windows backup.  An alternative location must be designated for the restored data or the current data on the computer will be erased by Windows backup and the restored System State data will replace it.
